Once a relatable and wholesome tech YouTuber, Mr.Whosetheboss was one out of the three tech channels I used to refer to whenever something new dropped in the tech world, the other two channels being MKBHD and Dave2D. The reason I make the opening sentence sound like nostalgia is because of his most recent "dream home" series. I reluctantly watched the series because my roommate wouldn't stop playing it on the TV and the series confirmed my fears, it's another unrelatable lavish home design series that feels completely tone-deaf.
The charm of Arun used to be his relatability, his awkward puns and his sense of wonder but his image in my mind is now of an out-of-touch guy making tech videos for nothing but money. To all the defenders of Arun, I would just like to say that there's nothing wrong with treating it as a job, especially after doing it for so many years, but it should also be acceptable for long-time viewers to call you out when they are disappointed.
Arun's "dream home" of inflated tech products, TV in every room, unnecessary numbers of Playstations and refrigerators, comes off as nothing but a flagrant display of wealth, especially at a time when jobs and money are running low for most of his middle-class viewers.
My complaints can easily be chalked up as jealousy, and nothing I say can make the accusers believe that I am not jealous, so I am not even going to try to convince you that I am not. Even if I am jealous, I believe my criticism still stands. For the whole time that I watched the series, I kept going "who cares?!" at every decision that he and his partner were conversing about.
My problem with Arun did not start recently, Arun disappeared from the list of my regularly watched YouTube channels a year or two back, but I still kept an eye on what he was up to and occasionally gave him a view if the subject topic was interesting. His continuous and unnecessary whining about companies discontinuing the plastic covers in favor of more sustainable packaging materials was hard to hear, especially for someone who likes to occasionally claim that he is all for the environment. I am not a fool, I understand that companies changing packaging material does not make them the saints that they want to be considered as, but this kind of incessant whining over an issue that, even if by a very little margin, helps the environment while not really taking away anything of value just came across as childish. Arun has also supported products from Caviar, a company that used everything from Iguana leather to Moon particles in their phones which is another example of ultra-rich, anti-environmental products filled with vanity.
Mr.Whosetheboss's channel, once filled with useful tech reviews, is now equal parts tech reviews as it is clickbait videos. Videos that even his own audience is not too keen on watching, as shown by his recent unofficial subreddit, which surprisingly has only around 2.4k members (as of this article's writing). One user even called him the "Mr.Beast" of tech reviews, which given the recent public disapproval of Mr. Beast, isn't something you want to be labelled as. It is saddening to see one of my favorite and trusted YouTubers transforming into someone I don't want any of my future tech advice from.
Beloe are a few pictures from the subreddit with the usernames erased using default software on my Windows laptop.

Not everyone is unhappy about the channel's direction or the recent videos. Some people appreciate the "Dream Home" series.

While others are quite unhappy, even to the point of unsubscribing.
I included these posts not to revel in the hatred or anger towards Arun. I genuinely wish him all the best for his future endeavors, and he does deserve the success that he has reached, but to film, upload and profit off of it is a choice that he made. I don't think this is the downfall of Mr.WhoseTheBoss in any way and I do not want it to be, but over the past few months, if not years, Arun has shown us the direction in which the channel is headed, and I am not going to be tagging along with him for the journey ahead. There's of course a chance that he uploads content that I like and which I cannot help but watch and there's a very slight chance that he takes care of the channel to the point that he wins back his ex-subscribers like me. But for now, I am happy with Dave2D and a few newer tech channels that I have started watching.
